My research suggests that institutions are being caught between the educator role—providing teachable moments regarding student conduct behaviors—and the compliance officer role—ensuring that liability is limited to protect the institution from being sued. The balance and shift of student conduct and Title IX educational philosophy, as opposed to the compliance/adjudication requirements, could negatively impact the Title IX agent’s lived experience, thus adding to their vicarious trauma. My study identified that more conversations are needed to fully support these professionals, whose role in higher education can be seen as a form of the helping profession.
